How can insurance not cover this surgery?

With all the talk on health care reform, my thought is this country needs to do something. My son is 28. He has been a diabetic since he was 5. In October, he lost vision in both eyes because of a hemorrhage; $30,000 and two surgeries later, he was able to return to work.
His health insurance is through his employer. His insurance is refusing to pay because they call this cosmetic. Hello - he was blind, how do you drive to work or work if you're blind? I guess they would rather have someone on welfare instead of supporting his family. Something must change.
