Honor Flight offered once in a lifetime, emotional experience

Recently, I had the privilege of going on the 35th Eastern Iowa Honor Flight. It was a once in a lifetime experience that I will never forget.

Having never been to Washington, D.C., it was an honor to see the monuments and memorials with fellow veterans. Arlington National Cemetery and the changing of the guard, especially when 'Taps” was played, was a very emotional experience.

Thanks to the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight program, Dick Bell and all staff members who put this flight together. Their hard work and dedication to honoring our veterans shines through in the excellent care provided to all participants.

Although it was a very long day, it was worth every minute. The crowd of people welcoming us home at The Eastern Iowa Airport - as well as the reception we received at Reagan International in D.C. - was amazing.

As a Vietnam veteran, seeing the Vietnam Memorial Wall with the names of more than 58,000 who gave their life for their country was moving. One of those names, Marvin Luerkens, was killed in action. I attended his funeral the Saturday before I flew out for my tour of duty. He was a brother to a high school classmate in Central City.

Thanks again to the Honor Flight program for this once in a lifetime experience.
