Honor Flight leaves veteran, escort in awe
The Gazette Opinion Staff

On Oct. 18, I was privileged to welcome back World War II veterans to Cedar Rapids after a one-day trip to Washington, D.C., on the Honor Flight. Each veteran was accompanied by an escort.
The welcome home celebration was wonderful, with flags waving, local musicians playing patriotic songs, and applause as the veterans made their way through the crowd of well-wishers who offered hugs and shouts of “Welcome home!” “Our heroes!” “Thank you!” and “God bless.”
My special friend on the flight could not say enough about the special treatment and guided bus tours around the capital. Our local Hy-Vee provided meals, a free camera and developing. This trip was a great way to honor our World War II veterans.
