Hold both Israel and Hamas accountable
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Nov. 11, 2009 11:33 pm
The Goldstone Report detailing human rights violations by Israel and Hamas in the Gaza War last December and January was denounced (House Resolution 867) by the U.S. House on Nov. 3 in a vote of 344 to 36, but many of the resolution's clauses were in error.
Three of several violations were these: The United Nations Relief and Works Agency building where hundreds of civilians sought shelter was repeatedly shelled despite repeated statements that no militants were there; a main flour mill and a large chicken farm were both demolished - neither were military targets. Hamas is also charged with war crimes for its rocket attacks on Israeli towns.
While Israel bears the brunt of the investigation, it is responsible for much more damage. An estimated 1,400 Palestinians, including many women and children, were killed, compared to 13 Israelis - four of whom died in a “friendly fire” incident.
If we are to have a world ruled by international law on a foundation of the protection of human rights, Israel and Hamas both need to be held accountable and conduct their own investigations.
The Israeli/Palestinian conflict has been one of the most intractable in the world, but no peace process can advance unless based on justice and respect for human rights.
