Higley is a wonderful home for seniors

To the editor:
Recently, I read an article in The Gazette regarding senior Americans experiencing indignities in nursing homes. That article prompted me to tell you about Higley Manor, which is where my 95-year-old mother lives and regularly tells me about the wonderful helpers on staff. The friendly atmosphere and kindness of all the staff members makes one feel like home and family.
Much of the original décor has been retained at the Higley Mansion and is therefore a lovely facility. It is noticeably very clean and that is due to the diligent, hardworking housekeeping staff. Also, the very capable maintenance employee keeps the building in good repair as well as satisfies each individual's room requests. The efficient kitchen staff plans, prepares and serves tasty, home-cooked meals for the residents, making sure each one has their specific dietary needs and wants met. Fortunately, they are a very patient staff as seniors can be very particular - I know, I am one!
When you walk into Higley, the first people you will meet are Wendy, the administrator, and her secretary, Renee. They are always glad to receive visitors and ready to give you a tour which is when you will meet the caring, certified nursing staff.
If you decide to visit Higley, located at 860 17th St. S.E. in Cedar Rapids, be sure to call ahead, (319) 364-6710, and arrange to go when you can take in one of the various activities (including live music) that the creative activities director plans for each month. Visitors are always welcome to attend these events.
