Health care reform wonderful for America
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Mar. 24, 2010 12:38 am
Republican Minority Leader John Boehner says that the health care reform legislation will bring “Armageddon.” Yet it is actually projected to reduce the deficit. Contrast that with the trillions of dollars in war spending and tax cuts for the rich that Republicans enacted without any effort to pay for either one, and the gigantic deficits that resulted.
Is it Armageddon to stress preventive care? Will it be Armageddon for the 45,000 people who won't die each year for lack of coverage? Or because illness-related bankruptcies will be a thing of the past?
Or because people no longer have to worry about losing their insurance when they switch jobs? Or because America is now inching toward the kind of coverage they have in all other wealthy nations?
The health care reform legislation is a vast improvement over the status quo. It is no government takeover, there are no death panels and it will not be Armageddon. It is scary to see Republican leaders frighten people that way.
This is a wonderful day for America.
