Hawkeye, Normandy analogy cheap, infantile
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Nov. 13, 2009 11:10 pm
Regarding the Nov. 10 letter, “Honor troops who took a beating”: To compare the immeasurable sacrifices of soldiers during the invasion of Normandy to a college football team displays an incredible lack of knowledge and respect for those who sacrificed so much to defeat fascism and protect our freedoms.
To somehow equate playing a game for a few hours each Saturday with the duty of soldiers is as distasteful as it is infantile. On the day before Veterans Day, a day when our nation should pause in humble gratitude for the sacrifices by so few so that so many would be saved from oppression, this letter writer missed the mark by a mile.
By all means, support the Hawkeyes, but please do not insult the memory of the fallen with cheap tailgating analogies.
