Hatch didn’t benefit from subsidies

Gov. Terry Branstad has repeatedly claimed Jack Hatch's business inappropriately profited from government subsidies. Television ads paid for by the Republican Governors Association claim Hatch's vote on eminent domain benefited him financially.
Government incentives are given to developers of affordable housing to induce developers to take on projects they would otherwise forego. Hatch took on projects few other developers would. He did not take government money that was not available to competitors. And, well over 80 percent of the Iowa Senate voted as Hatch voted on each of the eminent domain issue votes.
