Harrison should be preserved, not demolished

Many in the Cedar Rapids area still rue the day when the iconic railroad depot was demolished in 1961. Let’s not repeat that mistake by tearing down the beautiful, historic Harrison Elementary.
There is room to add on to Harrison if it is determined there is a need for an elementary school in that area — one that also could take in students from Madison.
But if that is not feasible, surely the school board could seek a buyer for the site, one who would preserve Harrison’s historic value.
To its credit and with a growing awareness of its cultural legacy, the city has preserved many properties in recent years. Let’s add Harrison to that list.
