Halting military aid to Israel would only embolden Hamas

In response to Ed Flaherty's guest column, (July 18, “Palestinians in Gaza are dying”) I agree with many of his concerns. As a veteran, however, he knows what history proves. The best war is a short war. Kill the enemy as soon as possible (following the rules, of course) and get on with peace. Is Israel trying to do this? Yes, with the help of a coalition of countries of which the U.S. is one. Is Hamas? Let us see.
What is Hamas' role in this war? They started it. They didn't play by “the rules." They tortured noncombatants and took civilian hostages. Hamas has clearly lost this war and are prolonging it. The solution? They should surrender and save lives on all sides. They can't, however, because the Hamas Charter will not allow them. Why do they continue to sacrifice their own people? Do they think they are winning?
I am in misery over the horrific suffering and loss of life of Palestinians, as well as, the Israelis. Here's a solution and it is addressed to Hamas: You have lost. Please surrender. Give up your hostages. Stop the needless slaughter and horror of your own people. Do this now! I beg you.
Ed Flaherty, how on earth could stopping military aid to Israel cause Hamas to surrender? Would that not just embolden Hamas!
