Gun permit story needed some follow-up
The Gazette Opinion Staff

Regarding the June 6 story “Sheriff: New gun law has allowed criminals to carry,” about claims by Johnson County Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek that he was, in essence, forced to issue a permit to carry weapons to criminals. I hoped there would be some follow on the information that would have clarified the situation.
I would love to know what type of criminal records the 250 people issued permits had. Are these people a danger to themselves or anyone else? If so, why did the sheriff not take action outlined in the law to keep these dangerous criminals from obtaining the permit?
If the criminal records referred to are simple misdemeanors and carry no indication of propensity for future violent behavior, then why would “many of them” have been denied (under the previous law)? Clarification, facts and context is needed. That is, or should be, the basic aim of any report in the newspaper.
