Greedy health care industry our demise

To the editor:
Referencing Mavis Levsen's letter ('Letter writer pens final letter to paper,” Dec. 17) in which she revealed the contents of the letter her husband composed just before his death on Dec. 5 decrying the futility of insurance companies.
Mr. Levsen is correct in claiming that insurance companies have no place in health care. In fact, the unchecked and greedy health care industry may cause the demise of our economy and current standard of living. Our health care system, in all its components, continues to rape the American public with impunity.
Erin Murphy reported, in the same edition of The Gazette, on Sen. Bernie Sanders' visit to Ames, where Sanders delivered his message of limiting money's influence in politics, reducing income inequality and guaranteeing health care as a right by proposing a single-payer health care system. Our salvation is in the passionate and correct vision of Sanders. Unfortunately, as an independent candidate, Sanders faces an almost insurmountable challenge in the political arena of the two-party system.
