Government should enable, not control
The Gazette Opinion Staff

I wanted to participate in the Internet petition I received today against government-controlled health care, but as usual, political opponents of the current administration's solutions only tell us what's wrong, not what would be the better solution. At least this Internet message is not asking for money - yet.
For what it's worth, I believe government regulation, vs. control, is the path to take for this particular critical issue. Why isn't it reasonable to look to fee and expense regulation of the insurance, pharmaceutical and medical services management industries to fix this problem? I guess you could call it price control, like that imposed on, and supported by, that Great Generation that ran this country during World War II.
The original premise of our good 'ol American enterprise system was health and prosperity attainable for all who were willing to work hard to the best of their ability, achieving success by their own God-given resources and ingenuity, sharing with and mentoring the disabled before they became so downtrodden they were beyond help.
The age-old science of economics concepts of “caveat emptor” and “supply and demand” were meant to be tools of entrepreneurship, not the means by which the few could achieve great power and wealth at the expense of those in need - free enterprise with a conscience, if you will; a people not controlled by government, but a people enabled by government.
