Government change can’t happen overnight
The Gazette Opinion Staff

Charles Krauthammer is wildly off-base, as usual, in his Jan. 24 column “What Scott Brown's win means for Democrats.”
Brown's win was not a rejection of universal health care, which Massachusetts mandated in 2006 (with Scott Brown's state Senate vote). It does not mean a comeback for the GOP, whose poll numbers remain in the toilet.
President Obama remains one of the most popular politicians in America. His 50-ish percent first-anniversary approval rating matches Ronald Reagan's.
The problem that the president has is that the American people want action now. It doesn't matter that it took many years of Republican rule to get us into this mess. Obama promised change and we all thought it meant tomorrow.
Anyone who thinks our problems can be fixed in a year is a fool. The Obama administration may not be working fast enough, and may have made some mistakes, but I would not trade it for John McCain and Sarah Palin, two who still seem totally unworthy of the office. And I can't think of a single Republican who could do better.
