Good coaching isn’t bending rules

In response to Lynn DeDeckert's Nov. 30 letter “Football playing field is uneven,” my sense is her comments ring of sour grapes.

So, recruiting practices of Catholic schools is supposed to be factual? As a non-Catholic, but as a huge fan of Cedar Rapids Xavier, I have never heard any discussion - none - about recruiting athletes to Xavier, and people do like to pass along to others what they know - Catholic or non-Catholic.

I believe the writer is confusing good coaching with some level of bending the rules, without identifying it as such. I also believe the writer is not addressing the fact that Christ is not only allowed in Catholic school conversations but is promoted in the students' and student-athletes' education process.

Some (parents and their) young adult students wish to attend a Catholic school where Christian values are taught and expectations for excellence prevail.

To the writer, please see that recruiting as you express it considers factors beyond a “blinder” view of athletes as only athletes. For instance, graduation rates and subsequent college attendance by Xavier students and student-athletes and ultimately college graduation rates are impressive.

Regarding Iowa City Regina's record setting streak of 56 wins, I am privy only to the commonly accepted view that they have a terrific coaching staff.
