Give our wildlife a break

I would like to thank the driver of a light-colored van who braked for a squirrel May 1 on First Avenue SE in Cedar Rapids. The squirrel was trying to cross First Avenue between 27th and 28th streets at about 6:30 p.m. My husband and I were sitting in a car at the stop sign by the Corner House.
I watched in horror as the frightened and confused squirrel dashed back and forth in a lane, trying to avoid the rush of cars coming from both directions.
The man in the van saw the squirrel and braked. The squirrel dashed to safety.
I have seen squirrels hit by inattentive drivers. This man cared enough to actually watch for wildlife and take action to save a life.
This is a critical time to watch for babies of many species near and on roadways. Baby birds are learning to fly and may find themselves on roadways, unable to fly away. Fawns and other wild babies are also on the move in June and July.
Please follow this kind man's example by watching and braking for wildlife.
