Regarding: “Money to find cures doesn't seem to help,” Sept. 19 letter:
Now, 34 years later, doctors are offering hope. Even though one may have to undergo surgery or chemo, this person may have more happy years with family and a cure may be found. Having dealt first hand with some of the many cancers, I can witness that without research there is no hope.
For example, there are certain types of leukemia that a few years ago would have been a death sentence, but not now. If not for this research, someone I love may have no chance.
As for new (hospital) units, I am all for giving money for this. If anyone has to spend weeks or months in one of these units, the least it could be is cheerful and homelike instead of dark, small and prisonlike.
Doctors in research are not in it for the money. Their long, hard hours doing this are for the common cause: a cure. Please give generously to these causes.
