Give doctor chance to explain before judging

To the editor:
I hesitate to interject myself into The Gazette coverage of the audit alleging that Dr. Brian Adams diverted $1.9 million to his personal accounts ('Audit: Doctor diverted $1.9 million,” July 10).
It was also mentioned that about $6,000 in patient fees were transferred with the approval of the former department administrator, referring to myself. I just want to clarify that in such matters I never approved anything without direct instructions from the departmental executive officer, who served as my and Dr. Adams' boss, and on whose desk the buck stopped.
Secondly, let us not condemn Dr. Adams before he has had an opportunity to explain himself in the court of law. Most of the alleged infractions Dr. Adams was accused of are in reality common practice in the field of academic orthopedics. To retain highly qualified orthopedic specialists, academic medical centers allow their specialists to complement their income from legitimate auxiliary sources, such as royalties from newly created devices, expert witness fees, and other venues of revenue. I can assure you that Dr. Adams was not alone in augmenting his income. Most specialized surgeons at UIHC indulge in similar practices.
Finally, I have known Dr. Adams for over 20 years. During these years he cared for thousands of patients and provided our hospital and patients with the highest quality of hand and upper extremity expertise. He is a professional, abundant in dignity and honor. In due time facts will attest to his decency and high moral character.
