The flood of 2008 brought Cedar Rapids a disaster of historical measures. I used to think, what are the odds of that ever happening again? But each year brings additional disasters and seemingly with more and more intensity. It can happen again.
Sure, there was a huge financial setback for our community and its residents. But, what I remember most is the pain on the people - the stunned look, the utter disbelief as the floodwaters receded and then the reality of personal possessions and the memories tied to them gone down the river. The horrible smell and the task of mucking out became commonplace. The reality of having to move on when the strength to do so wasn't there was depressing.
We have an opportunity to protect our community from that punishing event ever happening again. We have a chance to begin another phase of healing. This is also a chance to move our city forward to a bright future - one of recovery, security in your home and job, and the economic development that comes with protecting the flooded areas.
