To the editor:
This is a letter to express my appreciation for The Cedar Rapids Gazette. I am 90, living in my home, an early riser and The Gazette at my door each morning marks the highlight of my day.
I read letters of disgust and criticism regarding the daily paper which disgusts me. I read the entire paper, make my own opinions, read the comics and do the puzzles. Maybe the reason is that I do not own a computer and do not live in the world of technology. I read.
My husband, Leonard, and I farmed locally our entire life and he had a five piece dance band for 55 years. This was during the time big bands were popular and because of his musicians' ages he disbanded the group in 2000. In 2002, he started an accordion club with the help of Dave Rasdal. It was composed of people who took lessons as kids and put their accordions in the closet (they were no longer popular). These folks were near retirement and actually happy playing together and the group quickly socially bonded.
My husband passed away three years ago, but chose a member to direct the group. Recently, they were videotaped at their Cedar Rapids Library concert and in November a photo and article appeared in The Gazette. That surprised me and delighted me.
