French cafe, croissants will be missed

To the editor:
Croissant du jour, the popular Mount Vernon Road French cafe, has closed.
Who would have predicted that croissants, brioche and quiche would have been accepted and supported in an area traditionally defined by a palate of meat and potatoes and white bread.
Well, apparently the cafe owners knew a thing or two about the making of French pastries and knew that their establishment would do well. The cafe did so well that owners Ian and Isabelle rarely got a break, working long hours day in and day out since the cafe doors opened 11 years ago.
I was going through a pile of receipts from the last few months and realized that during their final month of operation I dined at Croissant du jour on at least six occasions. The last of which was the Friday before they closed for what was supposed to be their annual two-week July vacation. I and my 93-year old friend celebrated my birthday early on that Friday.
Recently, I was to meet that same 93-year old friend of mine at Croissant du jour, but when I hovered in front of the cafe I was shocked to read the sign saying they had closed. The window notice also thanked all of us for our years of patronage. But it is us, certainly me, that should thank and applaud Ian and Isabelle for their years of devotion in providing us with authentic, fresh baked French pastries. Merci beaucoup. Au revoir. I already miss those tasty croissants.
