Football fans, get back to the meaning of the game

I am writing in response to “Ferentz should recruit Democrats” (Nov. 20). I really respect Jack Jackson's sense of humor. I think there are way too many people who overreact when it comes to sports.
It's one thing to be a fan, it's another to demand a man's resignation or a cut in pay because of a poor football season. That is not what sports is all about. Sports is about individual growth within a team, while competing against other athletes, who are hopefully in it for the same reason because they love the sport.
The Hawkeyes' football season was a lot like what the Christmas season has turned into because of Black Friday - disappointing. There is something wrong with people cussing and plowing over others to save a few dollars.
But like football, there is always next year, and like Christmas, there is Cyber Monday.
So give the Hawkeyes a break and be optimistic for next year. During this holiday season, be thankful for what you do have instead of being selfish.
