Finding cure for Alzheimer’s more urgent
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Oct. 21, 2011 11:18 am
Thank you, Cedar Rapids, for supporting and participating in the recent Walk to End Alzheimer's. More than 1,000 walkers enjoyed a great event in Greene Square Park to raise money and awareness to support more research and find a cure.
My husband, David Good, has been living with the visual variant of Alzheimer's since June 2003. In 2007, he and I participated in our first Walk to End Alzheimer's. Since then, the East Central Iowa chapter of the Alzheimer's Association has provided support to David and especially to me as his caregiver.
In 2010, Congress unanimously passed the National Alzheimer's Project Act (NAPA), which President Obama signed into law in January 2011. That legislation as well as additional legislation being introduced this year recognizes the growing, costly Alzheimer's epidemic.
As a board member of the East Central Iowa Alzheimer's Association, I urge you to join me, become an advocate (www.alz.org/advocacy) and learn about current legislation and research to find a cure. Every 69 seconds, someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer's. The need to find a cure grows more urgent daily!
