Federal mandate lowers food supply

Our hometown newspaper, the Waukon Standard, has an inspiring story about the Corner of Hope Foods Resource Bank, which describes how some generous people in our community have contributed more than $300,000 to various charities for the purpose of alleviating world hunger. Much of this has come from farmers donating proceeds of some of their acreage annually to the resource bank.
In sharp contrast, our federal government mandates have caused more than 40 percent of our country's largest grain crop to be used as fuel. By diverting this large amount of our corn for other purposes, our government has been a participant in the reduction of a large potential world food supply and indirectly contributing to world hunger.
