Fast, quiet bicyclists pose danger on trails

The Gazette's Monday report on “quiet hybrids” (autos) being a risk for unsuspecting pedestrians reminded me of a similar danger when walking the local trails. The bikers ride fast and quietly and rarely signal pass “on your left,” responsive to the posted trail courtesy/safety rules.
Although the bikers move to the left side of the trail when passing, they don't realize that a walker could simultaneously move left to avoid a puddle or mud or just view something. A collision could result in serious injury.
Most speeding bikers probably don't stop to read the very few and small lettered safety rule signs. Maybe the Linn County Trails Association is not advocating for more and better signs, believing the city parks department will take initiative. Maybe the parks department is waiting for public requests before it allocates its limited time and resources to posting more easily read safety rules.
Maybe nothing will be done until an actual accident hurts someone.
