Family, consumer science beneficial today
The Gazette Opinion Staff

Thank you for your Jan. 5 article promoting family and consumer science, entitled “Don't call it home ec: Learn the FACS.” It was a good article emphasizing the importance of family and consumer science for students today. We also encourage The Gazette to report what our local area schools are presently doing in their respective programs in this area, since this article came from Kansas City.
In the future, we hope to see an increase of family and consumer science in the schools. Students today certainly need money management, consumer education, housing and household equipment, child development and parenting, foods and nutrition, clothing care, personal and family relationships in order to become responsible citizens now and in their future.
As a representative of the local Cedar Rapids Family and Consumer Science Association, I remind readers that our organization strongly encourages all schools to increase the offerings of these subjects to the middle and high school students.
