Facts show speed cameras are needed

Our clueless governor and a group of Republican legislators are trying to ban red-light and speed cameras. Despite studies showing these cameras reduce accidents and save lives, some still refuse to see the light. They scream “Big Brother” or claim that the cameras serve as a revenue-generating device. Some facts:
l A speed limit is the law, not a suggestion.
l We will probably never have enough law enforcement officers to adequately patrol our roads and intersections; if we did, we'd all feel the tax increase to pay for it.
l “Speed kills” is not just a slogan.
l Many people believe they have the right to speed; ask any law enforcement officer.
l Given the generous tolerance level for speed infractions, people who receive tickets are not just going a couple of miles per hour over the limit; in many cases, they're smokin'.
Branstad wants to tell Cedar Rapids how to enforce our traffic laws. You'd think Republicans would be happy that the traffic cameras provide a way to use private business in coordination with government, cutting costs to taxpayers and freeing officers for other work. Does the governor think it's fair for some people to endanger the rest of us when they think no law officer is watching?
I hope our legislators will show the same courage exhibited by our City Council in approving the cameras.
