Extending tax allows for rebuilding, protection
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Feb. 27, 2012 11:46 pm
The unprecedented flood of 2008 was more than just a blow to our community and economy; it disrupted lives and irreparably damaged property. We cannot forget the images of our flooded city and the crushing weight of the devastation.
On March 6, area voters will again have the opportunity to support the flood protection plan for Cedar Rapids. The modified ballot issue allows for a sales tax extension of 10 years and directs all the revenue from the extension to flood protection. That is exactly what we want, and what we need, to assure both sides of the river are safe from any future deluge. By voting yes, we continue the rebuilding process and will realize the long-term benefit the tax extension can provide.
