Experienced drivers shouldn’t be condemned
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Jun. 21, 2010 12:01 am
In response to Ann Taylor's condemnation (June 1 letter) of older drivers: Early in the Second World War, I was driving my dad in a 1935 Ford and no one was allowed to go over 35 miles per hour in order to conserve fuel and tires for the war effort.
Soon, an elderly man pulled abruptly in front of us, then continued to go very slowly. I remarked to Dad that some old people shouldn't drive. His quick answer was, “If you didn't know how to drive when you were young, old age wouldn't make you more capable.”
I have driven more than 2 million miles and flown my own airplane more than 2,000 miles. I've been in the Marion airport many times in past years and continue to own an airplane. Care to go for a ride, Ann?
