Exchange students promote understanding

I'm an exchange student from Indonesia. I'm staying with the Clayberg family and I go to Jefferson High School. Being an exchange student helps improve understanding among cultures.
Before I came to Cedar Rapids, I only learned about American culture through the media. I thought Americans were very self-centered and impolite. After 10 months, I realize not all of the media's portrayals are correct. Americans are friendly and helpful. They also have great curiosity to learn about other countries.
Every time I talk about my country, they always show their interest. My exchange student experience also changed me. . I am more open-minded and can see other perspectives about the world's issues.
Just like I learned about American culture, my American friends and family learned why I wear hijab, eat everything with rice and can't eat pork. Part of my experience here has to be as an ambassador and explain about my country.
I encourage high school students to be an exchange student and Cedar Rapids families to host an exchange student. It's a great way to build peace in the world.
