Excessive drinking not to be celebrated

The story about the young woman who blew a 0.341 (blood alcohol, according to police reports) astounds me. Apparently people idolize, celebrate and enable this sort of behavior. Everyone makes mistakes and it would be naive to think people never “party,” but this isn't something “cool.” It's stupid.

I don't know if she realizes how lucky she is that she's alive but she is. I would hope those who know and love her don't celebrate this, but rather support her and yet show her just how wrong it was. And shame on every single person who thinks it's cool. What if she'd driven a car? Hit someone you loved? Would it be cool then? My god.

I went to the University of Iowa, too, and of course I drank and partied and all of that, everyone does, or nearly everyone does. But you don't seriously risk your life and then celebrate that.

The irresponsibility displayed by this girl and those supporting her for her actions on Twitter goes way beyond, but what upsets me the most is that now people will think this is how all Iowans are, and all Hawkeyes. This girl, and her supporters, are not representative of what it means to bleed black and gold. Trust that.

I really hope she learns from this. Judging by her tweets, I'm not so sure, but YOLO, right?
