My name is Brian McAndrew, and as a lifelong Iowan, I am writing to express my strong support for Escucha Mi Vos and the vital humanitarian work they do for our immigrant neighbors.
I have visited the Cedar Rapids ICE facility roughly half a dozen times to witness the events unfolding in our state. I have seen young families paraded into the facility before masked individuals carrying long guns. While these images were shocking, what truly stood out was the compassion shown by Escucha Mi Vos. I watched as they escorted families, gathered contact information for loved ones, and translated words of gratitude. These individuals are the epitome of "Iowa Nice."
Through these gatherings, I have learned that gaining legal status is a complex, lengthy process. Because of this, many live in constant fear of being separated from their children before their legal path is complete. In my time learning about their plight, I have never been encouraged to break the law; rather, the organization consistently urges everyone to remain respectful and safe.
This is why I am so disappointed in Ashley Hinson. It is beyond me why she would target an organization providing such essential support. Her actions do not reflect someone wishing to represent Iowa in the U.S. Senate. While she offered a meeting with a staffer, it is not the staffer who needs to be educated. Please reconsider and meet with these fine Iowans.
