End the silence to begin recovery

To the editor:
Two-thirds of American families have been touched by addiction. It means that a majority of us have a family member, co-worker, neighbor or friend who has struggled with substance abuse. And yet, we don't talk about it openly like any other type of chronic illness. The subject is plagued by myths and overwhelming misinformation.
Recovery is real and it's everywhere. More than 23 million Americans are living in recovery from substance abuse. At Prelude, we feel privileged to witness recovery. By sharing stories and talking about recovery, we can break down the stigma and encourage others to seek help. Together, we can end the silence and bring the promise and the reality of recovery out into the open.
September is National Recovery Month. For the first time, there will be a march on The National Mall in Washington D.C. 'Unite To Face Addiction” will be Oct. 4. Details about the march can be found at www.iamnotanonymous.org. Prelude is joining this national movement to end the silence and stand up for recovery through an online project.
The Prelude Project features personal discoveries made by individuals in recovery and stories of success. Follow The Prelude Project on Facebook and Twitter (#voicesofsubstance and #preludevoices) and Pinterest. If you or someone you know would like to submit a personal recovery story, visit www.preludeiowa.org.
Recovery is all of us. Speak up and encourage others to do so as well. When we end the silence, we help so many others begin their recovery journey.
