End gasohol subsidy to help agriculture
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Feb. 10, 2010 11:53 pm
In neighboring states, gasohol is priced equal to regular gasoline. In Iowa, gasohol is priced at
10 cents a gallon less than regular, because it is a major industry.
Where does the subsidy come from? At whose expense? Does this subsidy undermine our road repair funds? I have never gotten a straight answer on this.
Studies have shown that gasohol gets 10 percent fewer mpg than does regular.
Iowa is also a major beef, poultry and pork producer. Livestock producers are losing money because of the high cost of grain.
We can help solve our state's huge economic problems by eliminating this subsidy and strengthening our livestock industry. The grain producers should take a little less, give consumers lower prices, make livestock producers profitable again.
We are the only nation that can afford to burn our food.
