Emotion, pride swell after Honor Flight
The Gazette Opinion Staff

I was honored to be a part of the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., on April 26. What a fantastic trip. All the sights we saw, the World War II Memorial, Korean Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, Lincoln Memorial building, Iwo Jima Shrine, Arlington National Cemetery and the changing of the guard at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Also, the bus tour of many famous historical buildings, museums, capitol building and the Washington Monument. All this happened through the generosity of the Hy-Vee organization. Their donation of a big share of the flight plus our caps, T-shirts, cameras, development of the film and the box lunches made it all possible along with several American Legion posts and other generous organizations.
Also, thanks to all the volunteers who helped out on the very well- planned trip.
The one thing that brought a tear to my eye was the huge crowd that welcomed us home around midnight at the airport. What a welcome. Makes me even prouder to be an American. Thanks again from me and my daughter, Rita, who accompanied me on the trip.
