Electoral college should be protected

I hope U.S. Rep. Abby Finkenauer thinks long and hard about the consequences of supporting a bill introduced by Rep. Steve Cohen of Tennessee that proposes abolition of the electoral college.

This proposal is a direct, and substantial threat to our federal republic. The Founding Fathers saw the threat of having a presidency continually elected by the most populous regions of America. Hence, the electoral college, to ensure states with small populations are not dominated by the likes of Florida, New York and California.

In the (unlikely) event that this amendment would ever be ratified, you could rest assured that the likes of Iowa, the Dakotas, Wyoming and many other small states would never have a voice in our presidential election process again. As a representative of Iowa, I hope and pray Finkenauer understands this fully.

More concerning than this bill's introduction is the motivation that Cohen and his political colleagues have, which is nothing more than the lingering bad taste of political defeat. Thankfully, our Constitution requires states to ratify amendments by a three-fourths majority, which is another way for small states to protect themselves from the coastal population, and sour grapes.
