Editorial staff had it right on court decision

I would respectfully but strongly disagree with the coverage of the Iowa Supreme Court's decision that appeared March 17 (“Iowa court ruling threatens jobless service”). It read more like a reprint of the governor's spin and Teresa Wahlert's affidavit seeking a stay.
Iowa Workforce Development Director Wahlert's affidavit reads: “because of the Court's ruling” as causing the funding crisis in her department. Rather, it was the intentional and unlawful exercise of the item veto power that caused this problem. The reader would have a difficult time figuring that out from the story as written.
For those of us who follow this area of the law, it is too bad the news story could not have been written by the authors of The Gazette's editorial from a couple weeks back. They had it right.
