Editorial on 4-H diversity took the low road

This letter is a commentary regarding The Gazette's editorial about 4-H diversity ('Rural groups can't afford to resist diversity,” April 26).

You could have mentioned that Iowa 4-H guidance policy states, 'In keeping with federal and state law, Iowa 4-H does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, age, ethnicity, religion, national origin, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity, genetic information, sex, marital status, disability, or status as a U.S. Veteran in any of its programs or activities.” But you didn't.

You could have mentioned that Iowa 4-H required the Hereford Breeders Association to remove their photo-op billboard. But you didn't.

You could have mentioned that across Iowa, thousands of volunteers spend tens of thousands of hours offering assistance and their expertise to tens of thousands of youth. But instead you chose the low road.

Words carry consequences - the story you told will discourage minorities from joining 4-H, thus making the situation you disparage even worse. Some youth that could benefit from joining 4-H will miss out and that's on you!
