Editorial fails to paint convincing picture

Friday's Gazette editorial could not have been more off base. The headline suggests religious freedom is at issue, but utterly fails to make that point. First, “we disagree the project itself is disrespectful.” I believe The Gazette Editorial Board hasn't the first idea what a 9/11 family feels like. But, it goes on to say there has been divisive rhetoric and blatant untruths but doesn't provide evidence or examples.

Next, the claim is made that the mosque would be landmark to our nation's strength. How? Don't the hundred other mosques in New York City do that already?

As obviously misguided that condemning a religion would be, it certainly wouldn't be “unconstitutional,” as our First Amendment guarantees freedom of speech (and the press). Likewise, disagreeing with the location of this particular mosque is a perfectly acceptable free speech exercise.

The mosque has cleared zoning and other requirements, so the only way it won't be built is by lack of funding or an attack of conscious by the developers. We'll see what happens.
