The Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance is proud end the year knowing that renewable energy has been a fixture of success for Eastern Iowa for another year. The growth of renewable energy makes our communities stronger and our economy more robust.
The solar project in Linn County continues to stimulate the county. REGEN Fiber opened a wind turbine blade recycling facility this year, placing Iowa on the national stage for its innovation in the industry. The University of Iowa was recently recognized for its sustainability initiatives, earning a gold star rating from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. According to the report, 84% of the university's electricity comes from green power, making the University of Iowa a leader among higher education institutions in renewable energy use. Across the state, clean energy makes up roughly two-thirds of energy produced in the state.
Recognitions like this are exactly why the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance supports policies that encourage investments and deployment of renewable energy. Smart sustainability practices are critical components to business attraction. Companies seeking to relocate are increasingly looking to find 100% renewable energy sources to power their businesses and attract an innovative workforce.
For Iowa to continue forward momentum and reap the benefits of the energy available to us in our own neighborhoods, decision-makers must consider the implications of turning down clean energy projects. Harnessing our natural resources gives Eastern Iowa a leg up, and I hope to see even more of it next year.
