Dropping of immigration charges unconscionable
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Nov. 23, 2009 11:18 pm
The decision by U.S. District Chief Judge Linda Reade (to drop immigration charges against Sholom Rubashkin, former Agriprocessors company vice president) is in my mind unconscionable.
Since when does up holding the laws of this country become a budgetary issue? Of all of the waste and fraud that goes on in the spending of our federal dollars, I believe that prosecuting those who exploit those laws is far from wasteful.
While it is true that Rubashkin is receiving sentences from another case that far exceed his life expectancy, there are principles of law that this action excluded. One of the largest contributors to our immigration issues is this very issue that has been swept away.
Let's put the issue to trial as we should for all breaches of our legal system. Beyond Mr. Rubashkin, the corporation of Agriprocessors is responsible and should face the same legal issues.
