Drivers: Keep better watch for school kids

On Nov. 12, I observed a small child almost lose his life, or at least suffer very serious injury.
The child was at the intersection of 29th Avenue and 31st Street in Marion. He was crossing 31st Street on the north side of 29th Avenue when a car accelerated quickly trying to beat traffic while crossing 29th Avenue going north. The car stopped within feet of the child.
Only repeated honking by a van driver at the intersection alerted the oncoming driver and prevented a terrible tragedy. This happened around 4:15 p.m. on an overcast day with sunlight beginning to fade.
I drive 29th Avenue a dozen times a day and see many instances of drivers gunning their cars to cross 29th Avenue. I ask drivers to take extra care in looking for schoolchildren - especially in the afternoon after school has let out.
