Drivers deserve tickets when speeding

To the editor:
Regarding the May 10 article 'Is C.R. getting national rep as speed trap?”
As for the fact that a good percentage of people who have been issued tickets are from out-of-state, perhaps they have not considered that when someone is not familiar with a route and the dangers present, they are more likely to overestimate the speed at which it is safe to drive. This is why speed limits are posted. If a driver can't stay under 12 miles over the posted limit, he/she deserves the ticket.
Back in the 1970s, I was commuting from Charles City to University of Northern Iowa to attend school. I had been told by people to make sure I observed the speed limit as I passed Janesville, for the 'town cop” was zealous in his intent to catch speeders. I never was ticketed, and it made me nervous, as it would have been a burden to have to pay one. But the reason I never got one is because I obeyed the law.
If someone approaches Cedar Rapids, there is a 60 mph sign posted at the outskirts. If they obey that number, they won't receive a ticket within the 55 mph range.
My hope is that Cedar Rapids can work something out with the Department of Transportation to keep the cameras in place.
