Driver feels safer with traffic cameras

To the editor:
It is pleasant going the speed limit on Interstate 380 through Cedar Rapids without being run down, like in some years back. Yes, the city income from speeding fines is considerable. I say, the more speeding money put in city coffers the better. Now look at the other side of the coin. If no one sped, there would be no income for the traffic camera leaser and none for Cedar Rapids. No one could afford to keep the traffic cameras in operation. Could that ever happen? Wishful thinking!
As far as new signage, there should be a '55 mph speed limit ahead” sign about one quarter mile before each of the existing 55 mph speed limit signs. No one would then have any excuse to be speeding in the 55 mph zone. Even the way it is now, there is no speed trap as there is plenty of time to slow down before the traffic cameras can see your vehicle.
I personally would like to see many more 55 mph and 60 mph signs right up to speed changes to remind drivers what the speed limit is along the way.
I believe there should also be traffic cameras located along the rural highways and interstates in Iowa, maybe even a few movable units. Possibly the fines would pay for highway and bridge repair, without a gasoline tax increase.
