Downtown group taking road money
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Apr. 13, 2013 12:31 pm
Rick Smith has performed an admirable public service with his Tuesday article (“Road becomes battle line”). It's not often Cedar Rapids' leaders so openly acknowledge they are the “ ... giant in the room,” sleeping or otherwise.
Streets, roads and bridges are in disrepair, yet millions of dollars intended for road projects are hijacked by the Corridor Metropolitan Planning Organization, otherwise known as “the downtown power group,” for use on trails. Those funds come from gas taxes, which the Legislature wants to increase.
How unfortunate that Cedar Rapids is so interested in sticking that “little finger” in the eye of their neighbors. Maybe they are thinking of a different finger?
