Downsize government, give power to states

After listening to portions of both the Republican and Democratic conventions, I am struck by the difference in attitude between the two. Many speakers at the Democratic convention talk of the problems our country faces and their solutions are almost always more government intervention. The Republicans address many of those same issues by getting government out of the way and relying on private enterprise and personal initiative to make the changes.

Our Constitution states in the 10th Amendment: “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” Read our Constitution for a listing of the powers our government is to have. Our Founders envisioned a smaller central government with the states and municipalities retaining much of the governing power. Government that is closer to the people is more responsive to the needs of the governed. And heed the warning of Thomas Jefferson: “My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.”
