Don’t forget Iowa’s civil rights history
The Gazette Opinion Staff

I just read Elizabeth Matus's Monday column regarding Iowa and its Supreme Court judges. As a federal civil servant who was born and raised in Iowa, I can't agree more with her. After the court decision on same-sex marriage, I frequently found myself explaining with pride Iowa's long history of progressive actions on civil rights to those who view the Midwest as flyover country.
Now, I can only hope that the state and its citizens reflect on that history, ignore outside influences, and continue to treat all people with respect and dignity.
