Don’t be a victim of scam on phone bill
The Gazette Opinion Staff

I am writing to let you know of a scam that has happened to us.
We discovered a charge on our monthly phone bill for $14.95. My husband called our local phone company and they said, “it is probably something that someone clicked onto on the Internet and signed up for.” They gave him an 800 number and said he would need to call this company and cancel with them. He did that and was given a confirmation of cancellation number.
There are just the two of us here. And neither of us requested it. The charge is through ILD Teleservices. So I Googled it and found it is a major scam happening across the country by this service, as well as a few others.
My husband has paid it three months now and we are ready to pay the phone bill for this month but I am going to inform our local company about the scam and not pay this. I don't know if it will cut off our phone service or what but I am not paying to be scammed.
And I discovered there are several other “teleservice” companies and all are scamming all of the phone companies. Why are the local phone companies allowing this to go on?
So people, please check your phone bills and report this to: Utilities, Iowa Department of Commerce, 350 Maple St., Des Moines, IA 50319-0069.
