Domestic violence is everyone’s issue
The Gazette Opinion Staff

Every day in this country, three women are murdered by a husband, former spouse or ex-boyfriend. One in four women will experience relational abuse in her lifetime. Women do not experience violence alone as it impacts their family members, friends, co-workers and neighbors. Domestic violence is everyone's issue. Most important, it's every man's issue because every man has a father, brother, son or friend who can make a difference.
While most men are not violent and abusive, few speak out against violence and aggression in relationships for fear of being accused of butting into someone else's business or believing that the behavior is somehow justified. The Iowa Men's Action Network, or Iowa MAN, seeks to change this reality by connecting men with information and opportunities for violence prevention.
We are well-meaning men from across the state who are partnering with the Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence and other advocates to raise awareness about domestic abuse and violence against women and promote healthy and safe relationships.
As men, we play a unique and important role in modeling to young boys that strength and aggression have no place in relationships. It takes real strength and courage to stand up and confront violence against women and girls. For more information, call (515) 244-8028 or (319) 365-1458, Ext. 156.
