Dog owners showed no compassion after attack

Last Tuesday evening (Oct. 27), as I walked my small dog in our safe northeast-side neighborhood, she was attacked by two other small dogs in front of their house. The other dogs' owners did nothing to control their dogs, except yell at them. After the attack, the owners didn't apologize or ask if my dog was OK. It was dusk and I couldn't see the extent of her injuries until I got her home.
My husband and I took her to the emergency veterinary hospital. She had bites on her tail and rear, and a paw was shredded and bleeding profusely. She has had daily bandage changes at the vet's office and antibiotics and painkillers.
I have wrestled in the days since the attack with whether I'll ever be comfortable in taking her for a walk again. I finally decided that from now on I will be carrying pepper spray, ready to use on any dog not on a leash that gets close enough to be sprayed.
